On November 28, 2017 we released a new version of TunnelBear for macOS that uses a different encryption protocol called IKEv2 alongside our original protocol, OpenVPN. With this change, the app will attempt to connect with both protocols and then use whichever one is faster. This should improve the performance of your app overall. However, in order for us to make this change, upon installing the macOS app or updating your version in-app, you will be prompted to add VPN configurations. If you do not allow the VPN configurations to be added, your app will still connect normally using the original OpenVPN protocol. However, we suggest allowing the new configurations to take advantage of performance improvements, especially your internet speed with the VPN connected, that can result from having both IKEv2 and OpenVPN permitted.
